City and Guilds Fashion Level 1 – Week 4
As I didn’t get very far with my mood board last week, that’s mainly what I’ve been working on since then. I started with the beach huts, lighthouses and stripes, and then began looking at different mermaid tattoos. That in turn led me to nautical stars, which are popular tattoos (and interestingly, the kind of tattoo I have been considering getting myself). Here’s the mood board (I don’t want to quite classify it as ‘finished’ yet):
I also received my fabric samples from Sewbox, and I spent a few hours pinking them all and sewing them onto pieces of card for my fabric folder. They look lovely presented in this way. I’m really pleased to be able to build up a fabrics folder like this as I know I will refer to it time and time again in the future. I didn’t need to use all of the samples (there were A LOT!) which was good as I’m using the rest for appliqué letters for bunting. Hurrah!
We spent the lesson looking at each other’s mood boards and gathering ideas. (We were originally going to do fashion drawings, but that will be next week now). It was really good to gather suggestions and ideas from so many people. Towards the end of the lesson we started drawing out some ideas for our design. I found it hard not to cross out ideas that I sketched and then disliked, but I have to leave them for the examiners to see! I’m currently thinking my colours will be navy blue and dark red, that there will be some stripes, and nautical stars. I like the mermaid tattoo idea, but I don’t know how I could make it look good. The main thing is that I want to make a skirt which I love, and which I want to wear; I don’t want to make something just so I can pass the course. I could make a horrific mermaid skirt with sequins and the lot, but I’d never wear it!!! This is as far as I got last night:
Over the coming week I need to work on more things for my art folder, and more design ideas for my skirt. All suggestions gratefully received!

I have some nautical/tattoo print fabric if you want a swatch of it?
Ooh yes please! Ta very muchly 🙂
Will bring it when I see you next!
Hi, I am glad the swatches are useful for you! I love the moodboard and your sketches. I think it’s a great idea combining stripes in to the stars – my personal opinion on the number of stars is less is more, otherwise with the stripes too it might be a bit too “U S of A”, but that’s just my opinion of course 🙂 My favourite sketch is the pencil skirt with the star at the bottom, and is that a row of beach huts just above? Fabulous!
You’re right: I don’t want to end up looking like I’m wearing the US flag (although I do think that would make a great skirt too, just not very nautical!). Yes, in that sketch I used the beach huts to separate out the plain top section from the bottom. I’ll have to experiment with colours though… Exciting!
